Christian Walking Tours of Rome

Scala Sancta is a network of religious scholars who organize in-depth walks of Christian Rome for an intellectually discerning clientele.

Rome's plethora of artistic treasures can often bedazzle visitors into seeing only the aesthetic side and missing the profound spiritual meaning that inspired them. At Scala Sancta we endeavor to present the monuments of Christian Rome to the modern pilgrim through the eyes of the faithful who made them, and for whom they were made.

Calling on our varied backgrounds in art, history, and theology we lead walking tours of Rome that examine in depth the Christian meaning of the city's monuments, as well as illustrate how 2,000 years of Christian presence has shaped Rome as we know and love today.

At Scala Sancta we offer pilgrims of the third millennium the eye-opening experience of seeing the works of Michelangelo, Caravaggio, and the other geniuses of Renaissance Rome not just as technical achievements in the history of art, but also as powerful testimonies of the Christian faith of the artists and their patrons. By showing people the dynamic interaction of history, art, liturgy and doctrine, we hope to close the gap between the Christians of ancient, medieval, Renaissance and modern Rome, as well as demonstrate that we are all part of one great tradition of the followers of Christ.
